The 90's Are Back By The Sewing Scientist

If you have been to any major retailer or department store recently - you probably know that the 90's are back! Everywhere you look there's plaid flannel shirts, lots of black, combat boots, track suits, spaghetti strap dresses. I graduated from high school in 1994 and immediately got a job in a department store juniors department to pay my way through college. I'll never forget the countless hours I had to spend fixing spaghetti straps on hangers. Those things can become a tangled mess and I loathed it every time a new shipment came in.

One thing that I loved from the 90's was baby doll style dresses. Working in retail, I didn't get any commission on sales, but the number of hours I worked was dictated by how much I sold per hour. I could sell a baby doll dress to just about anyone!

Now, thanks to the I love the 90's pattern (link https://www.ellieandmac.com/collections/juniors-womens-patterns/products/womens-90s-dress-pattern?aff=675) , I can make my own and put my own take on the resurgence of the 90's fashion trends.

I love to wear black - it's always in style. So I decided it was perfect for the bodice of my I love the 90's dress (https://www.ellieandmac.com/collections/juniors-womens-patterns/products/womens-90s-dress-pattern?aff=675).

Plaid is so 90's, and I decided to pay homage by using a plaid for the skirt. I took a few inches off the bottom of my skirt to give my I love the 90's (https://www.ellieandmac.com/collections/juniors-womens-patterns/products/womens-90s-dress-pattern?aff=675) more of a tunic length.

The I love the 90's is great to wear with skinny jeans , leggings, or bare legged! I tried it on with black skinny jeans for a dressier look that I could get away with at work.

I also tried a pair of denim jeggings for a causal look.  If I still had my black leather motorcycle jacket from high school - I'd really be styling!

For my I love the 90's dress (https://www.ellieandmac.com/collections/juniors-womens-patterns/products/womens-90s-dress-pattern?aff=675) , I used athletic brushed poly for the bodice, and a plush brushed poly for the skirt from Zenith & Quasar Fabric (https://www.zenithandquasar.com/) .

The great thing about the I love the 90's dress (https://www.ellieandmac.com/collections/juniors-womens-patterns/products/womens-90s-dress-pattern?aff=675)  is that you could use a woven for the skirt. I think a plaid flannel skirt with a solid knit bodice would be super cute!

And a tip for the gathering skirt on the I love the 90's dress (https://www.ellieandmac.com/collections/juniors-womens-patterns/products/womens-90s-dress-pattern?aff=675)  is to use your serger to gather. I do all my gathering on my serger. I set my needles to a 7, and max out my stitch length and differential feed. I get the most perfect gathers with my serger.
